What is Moral Injury?
According to the National Center for PTSD, moral injury is defined as the distressing psychological, behavioral, social, and sometimes spiritual aftermath of exposure to events that go against an individual's values and moral beliefs. This type of injury has been most researched within the military and is a common behavioral health concern for those individuals in need of treatment. This type of injury can cause guilt, shame, anger, an disgust that make it difficult for the individual to process traumatic events and grow from their experiences. For this reason, it's important for members of the military, Veterans, and treatment providers to understand this type of injury and be aware of the best practices for treatment.
